12" finished size (12 1/2" unfinished)
Cutting Directions:
Light: Cut 5 squares 3 7/8" Divide 2 of them diagonally to make half square triangles.
Cut 4 squares 3 1/2"
Medium: Cut 3 squares 3 7/8"
Dark: Cut 1 square 6 7/8" and divide diagonally to make two half-square triangles.
Sewing Directions
On the back of the three 3 7/8" light squares, with a pencil lightly mark a line diagonally from corner to corner. This will be your cutting line. On another line on each side of that line, 1/4" away. This will be your sewing line (figure 1). Layer a light square with a medium square, right sides together. Sew the squares together on these two sewing lines and cut them on the cutting line. Press out and you will have two half-square triangle blocks.
Using one of the Med-Light half square triangle blocks
and 2 of the light half square triangles, assemble into a triangle by sewing the
two light half square triangles to the square, matching short sides of the light
triangles to the med triangle. (Figure 2)
Add a dark half square triangle to these two units. (Figure 3)
Take the other Med-Light half square triangle blocks and
assemble into a four patch using the light squares (Figure 4)
Assemble the four resulting units into the block,
following the shaded diagram for placement.
